The Emotional Trap
Timed online auctions are fast, and the countdown clock creates real pressure. It's easy to tell yourself "just another $200" and end up hundreds or thousands over budget.
Set the Number First
Decide your absolute maximum before the auction starts. Base it on the car's fair market value, not on how badly you want it. Add in the expected deposit, shipping, and registration costs so your total stays realistic.
Let the System Work
Most platforms let you enter a maximum bid and will bid incrementally on your behalf. Enter your hard max once and step away from the screen. This removes the temptation to chase a car past your budget in the final minutes.
Remember the Deposit
The post-win deposit (typically 10-30%) is applied to the purchase price, but you need that cash available immediately after winning. Factor it into your budget before you place a single bid.
