The Post-Purchase To-Do List
Once you've bought a car, you need to handle the title, registration, and sales tax. It's less scary than it sounds.
The Title
The title is the legal proof of ownership. The auction or your Sales Agent will help transfer it to your name. This is the most important document in the transaction - don't lose it.
Registration
You'll register the car with your state's DMV. This typically requires the signed title, proof of insurance, and a bill of sale.
Sales Tax
Sales tax is charged by your state based on the purchase price. It's a government charge, separate from any auction fees, and varies by state.
A Note on Cross-State Buys
If you bought from another state, registration still happens in your home state. Your agent can tell you exactly what paperwork to bring.
