Sedan, SUV, or Truck? Matching the Vehicle to Your Life

The Form Factor Decision

Body style affects fuel economy, insurance, and practicality, so it's worth thinking through before you start bidding.

Sedans

Best for commuters and singles. Lowest price and best fuel economy, easiest to park, and fun to drive. Popular picks: Civic, Camry, Accord.

SUVs and Crossovers

Best for families. High seating, spacious, and often available with AWD. You'll pay more and burn more fuel. Popular picks: CR-V, RAV4, CX-5.

Trucks

Best for homeowners and contractors. Unmatched cargo and towing, high resale value. Most expensive to run and insure. Popular picks: F-150, Silverado, Tacoma.

The Rule

Buy for how you actually drive 95% of the time. Rent for the rare exception. You don't need a truck because you move a couch twice a year.

Buy for the 95% is the best framing. I almost bought a truck for the one time a year I'd use the bed. Glad I went SUV instead.
