Winter Car Care: 8 Things to Do Before the Temperature Drops

Why Winter Prep Matters

Cold weather exposes every weakness. A battery that's fine at 60 degrees might fail at 20.

1. Battery Test

Auto parts stores test free. Over three years old or under 80% of rated CCA? Replace it.

2. Tire Check

Minimum 4/32 inch for all-seasons, 6/32 for snow. Use the tread wear bars molded into the tread or a depth gauge.

3. Wiper Fluid and Blades

Use winter formula rated for freezing temps. Summer fluid can freeze on your windshield.

4. Coolant Check

A 50/50 antifreeze-to-water mix. Most shops test free. Low antifreeze can crack an engine block.

5. Emergency Kit

Jumper cables, a blanket, flashlight, ice scraper, and a small shovel. You'll be glad they're there.

Battery is the one people overlook. Stranded twice in my life, both times old batteries that tested fine in summer.
